| Swine flu? A cold? |
[11 Nov 2009|05:23am] |
I'm an elementary school teacher, and yesterday about 30 students in our school were sent home with "flu-like" symptoms (runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever). For the past 2 days I've had the runny nose, cough and sore throat, and after making it though the day with Parent Teacher Conferences last night I let my school know that I would not be in today. I'm debating if I need to see or contact a doctor or my midwives. I haven't had a fever at all (holding steady between 98.4 and 98.8), and neither did the kids that were sent home... which makes me feel that this might just be my school overreacting to a seasonal cold. My symptoms don't make me miserable... I don't have that heady "sick" feeling and, if I wasn't pregnant, I would have popped a DayQuil and gone in to teach, no question. Anyone had experience with "real" H1N1?
I have an appt. to get the vaccine next Tuesday.... I'm currently at 8w6d
Thanks!

There are two hospitals in my area that my doctor will deliver at. They both operate very differently.
One only does low risk deliveries (babies at least 37 weeks gestation with no abnormal test results) and does not have a nicu. They usually don't have very many patients at a time (my son was born at this hospital, and he was one of only 4 babies there) so there is a lot of individual attention. They do almost everything that needs to be done to the baby right in your room, and you have the option of going with your baby for the things that can't be done in your room. (first bath, and pediatrician check up is all I remember). They have an optional nursery that you can choose to use if you want to, but there is no pressure.
You deliver in the same room that you spend the rest of your stay in. It is a pretty decent room and guaranteed to be private. Fathers are allowed to spend the night, and they are not very strict on their visiting rules as long as the mother is happy.
I am planning to deliver at this hospital again.
Apparently this hospital has a somewhat uncomfortable waiting room. All I have gotten to hear since I told my family that I was delivering at the same hospital as last time is how uncomfortable the waiting room is. It is really starting to annoy me. If they don't want to hang out in the waiting room then they don't have to, they can stay home until the baby is born.
The other hospital takes your baby out of the room for everything and sometimes keeps them for hours at a time to do something that should only take a few minutes because they are so busy and crowded. The recovery rooms aren't private, and fathers usually aren't allowed to spend the night after the baby is born. (They will only make an exception if you end up in a room without a roommate). They are a lot more crowded because they have a nicu so a lot of people feel safer delivering there. My stepsister and cousin both delivered in this hospital, and every time I visited either of them the baby was in the nursery for some reason, and it would usually take them a pretty long time to get the baby back.
This hospital has a very comfortable waiting room. My family thinks I should deliver here so that I won't inconvenience them with an uncomfortable waiting room.
I can guarantee that while I am in labor, I will be way more uncomfortable than any of them no matter how hard the chairs are, so they can just suck it up and deal with it or they can stay home. I am not choosing a hospital based on the waiting room, there are other things I think are more important, like being able to actually see my baby, and being able to have my husband spend the night.

| Anyone who went to Planned Parenthood for their care? |

So, getting insurance is a nightmare, especially if you are a pregnant lady. I've applied for pregnancy-only Medi-Cal twice, and tried follow-up calls, and still nothing. So my assumption is that either I will not get Medi-Cal, or they're taking their sweet old time.
In other words, I'm 15w exactly today, and I am in dire need of seeing someone for prenatal care. The free clinic in my area that my mom referred me to does not return my calls, so they are definitely out of the picture.
The only other option that I know of is Planned Parenthood. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'm kind of dead in the water here.
My question is, is there anyone else here that went to Planned Parenthood for part or all of their prenatal care? What were your experiences like? Did you have a good relationship with your doctor(s)? Any suggestions on what to expect? I'm hoping to make an appointment tomorrow or Thursday, but I need to get on this; it has been put off for far too long in hopes that the Medi-Cal would go through, and I am tired of waiting and risking serious issues.
ALSO: Under the cut are belly pictures! :D I'm curious to see how far along you guys think I am. This was a shot after a decent meal and plenty of water, but it's still not too far from how big my belly currently is.
( Belly belly belly... )
Thanks in advance.

| Bella Band? |
[10 Nov 2009|11:08pm] |
Should I buy a bella band? Should I buy two? I'm 24 weeks now and I can still wear my pre-pregnancy jeans and even button them. Don't get me wrong, it's not comfortable to button them, but it can be done. I have maternity jeans, but they fall off me after 5 minutes of wear, and I'm just so frustrated with all of my clothes! Obviously I have approx. 16 weeks to go, so it would be used for 4 months, but I want to know about everyone else's experiences with them. Is there a cheaper version? Should I just go for the real thing? Also, anyone have the Bella Band tank tops or pants?
TIA!

| freaking out dad-to-be |
[10 Nov 2009|04:38pm] |
Good afternoon everyone:
I stumbled upon this community, and after a quick browse through the community info, and the last couple of weeks' worth of posts, I decided to ask for help.
I'm a newlywed husband. We've only been married for a month now, and although we had talked lots about having kids, I didn't think about the "when" aspect. Well, my wife took a test today and it seemed that it was positive.
I haven't told her yet (she just took the test today) but I am absolutely flipping out! I never thought of how I'd feel, but now that I might be a dad, I feel awful.. I've been ripping my hair out at work, I feel like crying (something I almost never do); in other words, a wreck.
I ran through the posts listed under the "fathers" tag, going back to June, but I wasn't able to find anything. Are there any communities available for scared dads-to-be that could be recommended? Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

We're turning our office/craft room into our son's nursery. Im having issues with what I want to do with it. I want to paint over the wall I painted in the early weeks of pregnancy. I have about a half a quart of canary yellow paint and I plan to buy a dark espresso brown. My ideas...
brown wall with random swirls and wavy horizontal lines that are yellow. or. brown wall with yellow silhouettes of the city of London (since his name will be London) or. brown wall with yellow outline of a city silhouette filled in with sponge inprints or little polka dots or any other suggestions?

I'm a newly pregnant person...6 weeks today. I'm already super achey all over, tired, and now having insomnia! I'm shocked at how miserable I feel already and I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg. Please tell me it gets better. I mean really, insomnia at 6 weeks? I feel like I need to quit my job now so I can get rest whenever possible. :D At least I'm not having morning sickness. *knock on wood*

I of course have been taking prenatal vitamins. This last week there was two day I forgot to take them. Those two days I actually slept through the night on both nights. I remembered to take my prenatal vitamin after the two days missed and was nauseas all day, night, and through the night. So yesterday I didn't take my vitamin and guess what? I slept through the night and felt awesome all day long. I took my vitamin about two hours ago and I feel nauseas. I feel like total trash right now. I'm starting to think the prenatal vitamins are making me sick. I have a doctors apointment tomorrow and I will be bringing this up with her. Anyone else have any thoughts or have experience with prenantal vitamins making you sick?
Thanks in advance.

| I am NOT weird! |
[09 Nov 2009|10:48pm] |
|
So my boyfriend thinks I've completely lost my mind. I spend a moderate amount of my time on the internet looking at pregnant bellies, watching birthing/baby belly videos, reading about pregnancy and newborns, and trolling this community. He constantly comments on it and thinks I'm obsessive and weird. That it's OK to "look around once or twice, but not EVERY DAY!" I think I'm just curious and interested and that this is a GOOD thing. I want to know everything I can and to make the most educated decisions that I can about my pregnancy, labor, birth, and then my newborn. So tell me how much time you spend on pregnancy-related sites compared to other websites. I think my interest is perfectly healthy and that he should be happy that I'm interested in learning and knowing! Ugh.

I havent breastfed my son in 4 months because of not being able to do it (meds, not producing milk, etc.) and well, MY RIGHT NIPPLE IS LACTATING. I'M LEAKING. I am currently on depo, and there is probably a million in one chance i am pregnant (We use condoms every single time and of course the depo). Is this uncommon or what? this is so weird and how do I make it stop?

I feel super-blah...in general...I am pretty tired of being sick and my productivity at work sucks (yes, at 32 weeks, still sick....as I know many of us are...which almost makes me feel better), too tired for a complete rant...so I will stop
anyways, just got back from a doctor's appointment and the dr. indicated that my baby is absurdly high and is thus causing ridiculous amounts of rib pain, especially on the right side...I can't even eat at times...
anyone else with a super high baby?

| Finding out the gender |
[09 Nov 2009|11:08am] |
|
I'm about 11 weeks along and my next appointment is scheduled for around 15 weeks. My OB is pretty u/s happy and I'm sure I'll get a scan then... think we'll be able to tell the gender at that point or is it still too early? What's the soonest anyone has found out what team they're on? I don't care either way but I am kind of impatient and would love to know as soon as I can. :) If it makes any difference, the machine she uses seems to have pretty good resolution, although I've only had trans-vaginal u/s so far so I can't comment on the quality of the abdominal scans.
